AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY, AND FISHERIES

BACKGROUND

Formal Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process has not been focused on agriculture, forestry and fisheries, despite the massive negative impacts that result from chronic and damaging practices through poor planning and regulation. However, evidence has shown that bringing Environmental & Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to these subsectors will extend the benefits of good planning and practice to large parts of the global agriculture community. The section was created out of concern about bringing ESIA into these subsectors. The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Section was formed at the IAIA Conference in Vancouver in 2004 (19 years ago). In 2013, ten subsectors were included in AFF work: Agriculture, Biodiversity, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Forestry, Livestock and Animal Husbandry, Fertilizers, Pesticides, Water development, Socio-economic factors and Gender considerations.

AIM/OBJECTIVES

  • The AFF Section is focused on finding ways and means of increasing and improving the application of ESIA to Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries sectors based on studies, research and inputs from practitioners, academia, and authorities.

  • To provide opportunities for AFF members with mutual interest to share experiences and discuss ideas in an informal setting.

  • To provide a forum for active topical debate and for developing and promoting good practices.
